Biography —
Kim Schlie Grunewald began serving as the General Counsel and Vice Chancellor for Legal Affairs in August 2024. Kim oversees an office of 20 employees including 13 attorneys across the University’s six campuses. As Vice Chancellor and General Counsel, Kim provides legal advice to the Chancellor and university leadership. She also oversees a wide variety of legal matters including litigation, employment matters, research and compliance, student discipline issues, open records, policy matters, constitutional law issues, athletics, law enforcement, real estate, construction matters, and contracts.
Kim was an Associate in the General Counsel's office beginning in November 2011. She was promoted to Deputy General Counsel on the Lawrence Campus in September 2018 and held that position through July 2024 before accepting the General Counsel and Vice Chancellor of Legal Affairs position in August 2024.
Prior to joining the General Counsel’s Office in November 2011, Kim served as an Assistant Corporation Counsel for the City of Chicago, where she represented the city in administrative hearings and state and federal litigation. Kim returned to Kansas in 2008 and served as an Assistant Attorney General in the Civil Litigation Division of the Kansas Attorney General's Office. In that role, Kim defended the State of Kansas and its employees in state and federal litigation involving civil rights claims, employment law, and constitutional challenges. In addition to her litigation work, Kim oversaw charitable trusts throughout the State, monitoring compliance and fiscal management.
Kim obtained a B.A in Political Science and an M.B.A. from the University of Kansas, and a J.D. from DePaul University.
