Colleagues,

During the past year, we have made good progress on our One KU initiative, which we initiated to better align our campuses behind a shared mission so that the University of Kansas can thrive for decades to come. As we look ahead to 2026, I want to share what the coming weeks and months hold for us in terms of One KU organizational transformations that are changing how we work together, make decisions and see ourselves — as one university in service to Kansas and the public good.

You will recall last year, we established a One KU framework through the University Cabinet that gives key leaders responsibility for their functions across all of KU. Since then, the past year has been dedicated to designing a structural model of excellence to support this new framework. We have identified where we can streamline processes, align policies and share best practices; where we can reduce duplication; and where we can connect disciplines that have historically worked separately.

In the weeks ahead, Cabinet leaders will begin introducing specific strategies and organizational approaches for transitioning their areas to a One KU model. You will see more detailed plans from institutional enterprises such as research administration, analytics and institutional research, strategy, finance, operations, and human resources, each designed to create a more agile and collaborative environment.

I am aware that change brings questions, and it is natural to feel some uncertainty as we evolve how KU is organized and how decisions are made. At the same time, each of us has an important role to play in this initiative, and I ask the KU community for a spirit of openness, engagement and shared responsibility. I also encourage you to reflect on how you can embody One KU in your own work, even if the changes may not seem to impact your role directly. I know I can count on each of you to help advance this initiative by proactively choosing to be curious, collaborate and seek solutions.

As I’ve said many times this year, KU is in a good place thanks to the talent and dedication of Jayhawks like you. We are advancing One KU from a position of strength, and together, we will embrace this opportunity to build something even stronger. For nearly 160 years, KU has benefited from intentionality and commitment to progress. These same virtues will benefit us moving forward as we work to ensure KU is positioned to fulfill its mission of education, service and research for generations to come.

Respectfully,

Doug
