Colleagues,

As you may know, Congress did not reach an agreement on the federal budget for the upcoming fiscal year by the Sept. 30 deadline. This has led to a federal government shutdown, and understandably, many in our campus community are concerned about the potential impacts.

Historically, KU has weathered previous shutdowns with minimal disruption, thanks to our resilience and preparedness. University leadership, in coordination with our government relations team, is monitoring the situation and working to mitigate any effects on your work, studies and research.

As of now, ongoing federally funded projects—including grants and cooperative agreements—may continue unless agencies specifically direct a work stoppage. If you have questions or anticipate a direct impact related to your work on the Lawrence or Edwards campuses, please refer to our Government Shutdown Information page for the latest updates and guidance. KU Medical Center researchers and personnel should refer to the recent memo sent by KU Research Administration.

For students, federal financial aid programs such as Pell Grants, student loans, and work-study funds are not expected to be immediately impacted this semester. However, if the shutdown extends beyond initial contingency plans, delays in application processing or agency support may occur. Lawrence and Edwards students who have questions should contact the Financial Aid & Scholarships office for assistance. KU Medical Center students should visit Student Financial Aid.

We remain hopeful this shutdown will be brief. Still, we recognize the uncertainty it brings, and we are committed to keeping you informed. Targeted communications will be sent to those whose research, employment or academic activities may be directly affected.

Thank you for your patience and continued support.

Respectfully,

Doug
