A statement on the invasion of Ukraine

Faculty, staff and students,

The unfolding attack on Ukraine continues to cause tremendous concern, anger and sadness across the world, including within higher education and here at the University of Kansas. This unprovoked attack on a sovereign democratic state has rightfully been condemned by leaders around the world, and on behalf of our university, we join them in condemning this assault. KU stands with the people of Ukraine and those throughout the world who are opposed to this attack.

Additionally, we want to express our deepest concern and support for Jayhawks who are impacted by these events, particularly those faculty, staff and students with ties to the affected areas. Beginning last week, our Office of International Affairs began reaching out directly to Ukrainian and Russian Jayhawks to offer them support and direct them to campus resources that can help them as this tragedy unfolds. In addition to these resources, we know we can count on each of you to do whatever you can to help fellow Jayhawks who are impacted by or struggling with the events in Ukraine.

In moments like this, each of us can feel limited in our ability to influence global events. But moments like this are precisely when truth, knowledge, expertise and free expression – the ideals upon which democratic states and higher education are founded – are most important. As a community of scholars, we experience watershed moments like this in the company of other learners, thinkers and individuals who seek to better the world. Take advantage of this moment to learn, ask questions, get involved, and participate in our university and democracy however you can.
