Campus events to commemorate 9/11 anniversary

Colleagues,

This weekend marks the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks on our country, and I would like to take a moment to reflect on this occasion with you. For many of us, that horrible day remains vivid in our minds as though it were yesterday. And yet, this fall our university welcomed first-year students who were not yet alive when the attacks occurred.

Some of the ways we will mark this solemn anniversary on our campus include a special lighting display on Saturday evening at the KU Memorial Campanile in honor of the nearly 3,000 innocent souls who perished in the attacks. In conjunction with the lighting, University Carillonneur Elizabeth Egbert Berghout will perform a special selection of music at 8:30 p.m.

Also, the Dole Institute of Politics will host an open house Saturday in which visitors can pay tribute to the lives lost in the attacks. The event, which will feature reflective music, is scheduled from noon to 4 p.m., and visitors are encouraged to bring flowers or other small mementos to place in front of the two World Trade Center beams housed at the Dole Institute.

The Dole Institute is also presenting an exhibit, “September 11, 2001: The Day that Changed the World,” in its Simons Media room, featuring a special poster exhibition reviewing the events of the day and highlighting personal experiences. The event will run through Sept. 19.

Thank you for joining me in remembering and honoring those who lost their lives in New York City, Washington and rural Pennsylvania, along with the sacrifice and service of our armed forces and first responders.
