Colleagues,
Welcome to "3, 2, One KU," a weekly memo in which I'll share updates and thoughts for the week ahead. The title of the memo is derived from the format: each edition will include three things to know, two things to share, and one reflection on how our "One KU" initiative is enhancing collaboration across our campuses. I hope you find this weekly communication informative.
Respectfully,
Doug
Three things to know
This month, I conclude my one-year term as chair of the Association of American Universities’ board of directors. I’m grateful for the opportunity to have served as chair, particularly because it has allowed KU’s interests and perspectives to be represented in national conversations about higher education. I look forward to working with incoming chair Ron Daniels, president of Johns Hopkins University, and will continue to represent KU as a board member. These are challenging times for our nation’s universities, but this moment also presents opportunities to innovate and enhance how we serve students and society. KU will continue working with AAU peers to ensure our research institutions remain positioned to do this important work. Thank you for celebrating Homecoming Thank you to everyone who helped make KU’s 114th Homecoming a memorable celebration of Jayhawk pride. From the return of the parade along Jayhawk Boulevard to alumni gatherings, awards ceremonies and Saturday’s football game against Baylor, the weekend was filled with energy and connection. Homecoming is a reminder of the important role alumni play in the life of our university. Their generosity and continued engagement strengthen KU and create opportunities for future generations of Jayhawks. We’re also grateful to the students, faculty, staff, volunteers and community members who helped bring this year’s festivities to life. Thank you for making Homecoming a celebration of our shared KU experience and the lifelong connections that make this university a community. Ways to vote in the Nov. 3 general election As a leading public university, KU encourages our community to participate in elections. As the Nov. 3 election approaches, we’re reminding employees of the options available to registered Kansas voters:
For voting locations, hours and ballot return options in Douglas County, visit the Douglas County Clerk’s voting and elections website. If you live in another county, check with your county election office for information specific to your area. KU’s Voting Policy allows employees to take time during the workday to vote when necessary. Please review the policy and request time off from your supervisor in advance. Thank you for your commitment to KU and the democratic process. |
Two things to share
KU researcher leads $4 million, multistate NSF grant to decode diseases
KU researcher Steve Soper is leading a team that has received a $4 million National Science Foundation grant to develop nanotechnology that could improve disease detection and treatment. The team brings together researchers from Kansas and Louisiana to study disease-related proteins at the molecular level.
Polling shows strong opposition to OMB’s proposed changes to grantmaking
As I’ve noted in previous newsletters, the White House Office of Management and Budget earlier this year proposed changes to federal grantmaking that would require senior political appointees to review and approve every discretionary grant.
According to new polling in Iowa, Kansas and Ohio, 76% of voters oppose giving presidents or political appointees final authority over federal research grant awards or cancellations.
