"3, 2, One KU" Weekly Memo - 10-12-2026

Colleagues,
Welcome to "3, 2, One KU," a weekly memo in which I'll share updates and thoughts for the week ahead. The title of the memo is derived from the format: each edition will include three things to know, two things to share, and one reflection on how our "One KU" initiative is enhancing collaboration across our campuses. I hope you find this weekly communication informative.
Respectfully,
Doug

Three things to know

Help shape KU's response to the U.S. Department of Education's call to action

KU is developing its response to the U.S. Department of Education's call to action, and we invite you to share your perspectives by Oct. 20.

Your feedback will help identify examples, accomplishments and opportunities from across our campuses to inform KU’s response. Designated university teams are developing draft responses, which the University Cabinet will review before submission.

KU will submit its response to the Kansas Board of Regents by Nov. 6. KBOR will then coordinate a response on behalf of all Regents universities for submission to the Department of Education.

Explore the new One KU Research Snapshot

Our Office of Research has launched the One KU Research Snapshot, a new resource highlighting our progress in research administration.

The Snapshot brings together the work of the One KU Research Administration Council with ongoing efforts to implement recommendations from last year’s assessments by the National Council of University Research Administrators. The work focuses on three priorities: efficiency optimization, effective communication and risk tolerance.

The Snapshot outlines what we’ve accomplished, what’s next and who’s leading the work. I encourage you to take a look and share your thoughts.

Work continues on Strategic Framework

The Office of Analytics, Institutional Research & Effectiveness continues to gather input on our Strategic Framework.

So far, we’ve held 36 engagement sessions across our campuses, reaching an estimated 2,878 attendees. We’ve also received 420 responses to our online survey.

On Oct. 15, the Strategy Office will review the feedback, identify key themes and develop recommendations for the University Cabinet to consider.

We aim to finalize and launch the Strategic Framework by spring 2027.

Two things to share

How KU chemistry research made MRIs possible

About 40 million MRI scans are performed in the United States each year. What many people may not know is that this technology relies on a discovery by three KU researchers in the early 1900s.

Catching up with Elyce Arons

In a recent edition of Crimson & Blue magazine, fashion entrepreneur and KU alumna Elyce Arons chats about her Kansas roots, college memories and a timeless piece from her GSP closet.
